Compost in Pinecrest - 20,000 Pounds and Counting!

Pinecrest has composted over 20,000 pounds of food waste in just 10 months.  And we are just getting started! 

As a Community, we have diverted that waste away from the landfill, and the toxic methane emissions it would create in the landfill. Instead, with the Pinecrest Composting Program, the food waste gets turned into nutrient rich compost that can be used agriculturally or even in our own gardens.

Getting involved is easy – and fun. 

STEP I  

Stop by the Composting Tent at Sunday’s Farmers' Market and pick up a free bucket.  Buckets will be available through the end of March. You can also learn about composting and its benefits. You can even pick up a bag of soil or super-rich worm casting -- at a very reasonable price.  

STEP 2  

Drop off your food scraps any day in the composting bins, maintained at the Pinecrest Community Center. Anything that was edible is compostable – including proteins, bones, and eggshells. On Farmers' Market Sundays, the bins are moved to the Composting Table, and you can drop off your scraps there.

 STEP 3 

Feel good knowing that the food waste is picked up twice a week and taken to Fertile Earth in Homestead, where they have mastered efficient, clean composting. 

The Composting Program is just one more way our Village is serving us, and the greater community. And special thanks to the County for supporting the Pinecrest Program. Let's compost, Pinecrest!

PS: Maybe you have tried composting at home and were unsuccessful.
