It's a Grind: Fixing Our Sidewalks

Dear Skip,

As I knock on doors, several residents have asked me about the spray paint on our sidewalks.  Sidewalks shift and become disjointed for a number of reasons.  One of the most common reasons is tree root growth.  Our Public Works Department is on it.  At the beginning of this year, the Village surveyed 20 miles of sidewalks to identify broken or uneven sidewalks .

You may have noticed sections that are now smooth and have what appears to be a white stripe. Engineers call this process “grinding.”  Concrete is ground to smooth over the change in elevation.  You may also have seen orange paint markings.  Those mark areas that are in the queue to be repaired.

Since February, the Village has grinded 1,175 sidewalk slabs -- or “flags,” in industry speak.  These transitions are now safe and smooth.  Within the next two months, our Public Works Director, Dave Mendez, expects the total flag repairs to reach 2,200.  The Village will replace those flags that cannot be grinded (approximately 1200).

In Summary

  • 1,175 flags have been repaired to date

  • 1,100 flag repairs are underway

  • 1,200 approximately flags will be replaced

  • Once the present work is done, over 3,500 flags will have been repaired or replaced.Thank you, Public Works!

Committed to Our Community,

Vice Mayor Shannon del Prado

PS – Director Mendez cautions this is an ongoing effort and community involvement is critical.  If you see a sidewalk in disrepair that has not been addressed or marked, please email public works at publicworks@pinecrest-fl.gov.
