Volunteer Vibes

Hoping you had a wonderful summer and that you were able to squeeze in a little get away. I don’t know about you, but I am always grateful to come home to Pinecrest.

I’ve mentioned in prior emails that my parents run a medical clinic for the underserved in Peru. Every summer, my husband and I help organize a Miami-based medical team that performs free surgical services for clinic patients.  This summer we had the good fortune of having another Pinecrest resident on our team:  Mia Schatz.

Going to Peru reminds me of the importance of supporting the less fortunate.  While canvassing in Pinecrest, I have met many residents who are doing amazing things – some local, some abroad.  We have so much talent and heart in Pinecrest.

So - with Thanksgiving around the corner - I want to share information about a local effort that one of our Pinecrest neighbors, Maryann Rio, is getting off the ground.  It is called Porch Pinecrest.  Basically, Porch Pinecrest is a simple, convenient way for you to donate non-perishable food items without leaving your home.  You simply let one of the Porch volunteers know you will be leaving donations on your front porch and a volunteer will come and pick them up.  The food will be delivered to two food pantries: South Ridge High School Food Pantry and Mau’s Foundation Food Pantry.  Hopefully, the effort will add more local food pantries as it grows.

Please consider having your family support this effort.  Together, we can make a difference for those facing food insecurity in our greater community.

If you are interested, email Maryann Rio at maryannsrio@gmail.com or call her at 305/562-2267. You can also learn more at:  https://porchcommunities.org/pinecrest-fl.  In fact, they are having a food drive this Thursday, 8/29.

Best wishes for the start of the new school year to those of you with children in school, and wishing the best for everyone into the Fall!

Committed to Our Community,
Vice Mayor Shannon del Prado
